How to remove the background from a profile picture

  1. Add your photo. The background is removed automatically, usually in a second or two.
  2. Pick a new background: transparent, a plain colour, or a blurred version of your original background for a "portrait mode" look.
  3. Frame it. Drag and zoom so your face sits in the circle, and check the previews.
  4. Download a square profile picture, or the whole photo, as PNG or JPG.

How it works, and why it's private

The tool uses Google's MediaPipe person segmentation, an open-source model that estimates which pixels belong to a person. It runs in your browser using WebAssembly, and a refinement step then sharpens the edge using detail from your own photo, so hair and shoulders stay crisp.

Because everything runs on your device, your photo is never sent to us or anyone else. The model files are served from this site and cached by your browser, and no image data leaves the page.

Frequently asked questions

Is my photo uploaded to remove the background?

No. Most background removers send your photo to a server. This one downloads a small detection model to your browser and does everything on your device, so your photo never leaves it.

What kind of photos work best?

One person, head and shoulders, facing the camera, with reasonable contrast against the background. It's designed for people, so it won't cut out objects, pets or logos. For logos, use the logo background remover on BAV Tech Solutions.

The edges around my hair look rough. What can I do?

Open Fine-tune the edges. Switch Detection to Better hair, which uses a model that recognises hair separately, then adjust Trim edges and Softness. A plain, contrasting original background also helps a lot.

Why is the first run slower?

The first time, your browser downloads the detection engine (a few megabytes) and caches it. After that, removing a background takes a second or two.

Should I download PNG or JPG?

PNG if you want a transparent background, for example to put yourself on a colour later. JPG can't be transparent, so it fills the background with white or your chosen colour, but makes smaller files.

What background colour works best for a profile picture?

A plain, light neutral (off-white or light grey) or a single brand colour. It keeps attention on your face and looks consistent across LinkedIn, Google and work apps.
