How to make an animated Facebook profile picture
Facebook won't animate a GIF profile picture. Here are the two ways that work in 2026, a profile video and Facebook's AI animate feature, and how to set each.

The short answer: Facebook doesn’t animate GIF profile pictures. To get a moving one, either set a short profile video (up to about 7 seconds, from the Facebook app), or use Facebook’s own AI animate feature on a still photo.
Why a GIF doesn’t work
A GIF uploaded as your Facebook profile picture is handled like any other image, so it shows as a still of its first frame. Facebook’s moving profile pictures are short videos, not GIFs, as guides to the feature point out.
Option 1: a profile video (your own animation)
This is the way to use your own design, such as your photo flipping to your business logo.
Make the video
- Open the Facebook profile video maker.
- Add your photo, and optionally a second image such as your logo.
- Crop each so your face sits in the circle, then pick an animation and speed.
- Create the video and download the MP4. It’s square, and it repeats your animation to fill up to 7 seconds so it loops smoothly.
It all happens in your browser, so your photos aren’t uploaded.
Set it on Facebook
- Put the MP4 on your phone.
- Open the Facebook app, go to your profile and tap the camera icon on your profile picture.
- Choose the option to select a profile picture or video, pick your MP4 and save.
Profile videos are set from the mobile app. The desktop website’s uploader only accepts photos (JPG, PNG, GIF, TIFF, HEIF or WebP), so an MP4 uploaded there fails with a “Can’t read files” message. Longer clips are trimmed to about 7 seconds, so keep yours short.
Option 2: Facebook’s AI animate feature
In February 2026 Meta added a way to animate a still profile picture with AI. You choose a preset, such as natural, party hat, confetti, wave or heart, and Facebook turns your photo into a short animation. It works best with one person facing the camera.
It’s the quickest option, but you’re limited to Meta’s presets. You can’t switch to a logo or choose your own motion.

Tips
- Keep the motion gentle. Your picture appears beside everything you post and comment on.
- Make the first frame count. Small or still versions of your picture show the start of the video.
- Stay in the circle. Facebook crops profile pictures to a circle, so the corners are never seen.
