How to create a circle profile picture
When you need a round profile picture, when you don't, and how to crop a photo into a clean circle with a transparent background in under a minute.

A circle profile picture is a photo cropped to a circle, with the corners outside it left transparent. The image file is still square, but only the round part shows, so it sits cleanly on any background colour.
Before you make one, it’s worth checking whether you need to.
When you don’t need a circle image
Most social and work platforms already show your photo as a circle: Google and Gmail, LinkedIn, X, Instagram, Discord, Slack, YouTube and Microsoft Teams all do. They expect you to upload a square image and crop it themselves.
If you upload a photo you’ve already cut into a circle, two things can go wrong:
- The platform crops its own circle inside yours, and a thin edge or halo from your transparent corners can show.
- Some platforms fill transparent areas with black or white, so your “circle” arrives on a coloured square.
For those sites, upload a square photo instead. The profile picture resizer exports the right square size for each one.
When a circle image is exactly what you need
A pre-cut circle is useful anywhere nothing crops the photo for you:
- Email signatures. Email apps show images as squares or rectangles, so a transparent PNG is the only reliable way to get a round photo.
- Websites and team pages, especially on a coloured background.
- Slides, CVs and documents, where fiddling with crop masks in Word or PowerPoint is tedious.
- A matching set. Crop a whole team’s photos the same size, with the same border, so they line up neatly.
How to make one
- Open the circle profile picture maker and add your photo. Drag it in, choose a file, or paste it.
- Drag the photo so your face is in the middle of the dashed circle, and zoom until your head and shoulders fill most of it. Everything outside the circle will be cut away.
- Leave the background transparent, or pick a colour if your photo is a cut-out with no background of its own.
- Add a border if you want a ring around the photo. It scales with the image, so it looks the same at any size.
- Download the PNG.
The whole thing runs in your browser, so your photo isn’t uploaded anywhere.
Why it has to be a PNG
JPEG can’t store transparency. Save a circle photo as a JPEG and the corners get filled in, usually with white or black, and you’re back to a square. PNG keeps the corners see-through. If an app or website asks for a JPEG, choose a background colour that matches where the photo will appear instead.
Which size to choose
- 256 × 256 for email signatures, where a small file loads quickly.
- 512 × 512 for most websites and documents.
- 1024 × 1024 for print, or anywhere the photo is shown large.
In email signatures, set the displayed size in your email app (80 to 120 pixels wide is typical). A larger file then stays sharp on high-resolution screens.
