Google profile picture size and requirements

The right size for a Google or Gmail profile picture, the file types and limits Google accepts, and how to frame a photo that looks good in a tiny circle.

The short answer: use a square image of at least 250 × 250 pixels. 1024 × 1024 is a comfortable size that stays sharp everywhere. Save it as JPEG or PNG and keep it under 5 MB.

Your Google profile picture is used across Gmail, Google Meet, Google Chat, Docs, Calendar, YouTube comments and Maps reviews, so these numbers apply to all of them.

Google’s own help for administrators lists JPEG or PNG, up to 5 MB, and notes that photos “don’t have to be square” because they’re scaled automatically. In practice, a non-square photo means Google decides how to crop it, so it’s better to crop it square yourself first.

Why bigger than the minimum?

Google displays your picture tiny, often 32 to 40 pixels across, but on high-resolution phone and laptop screens those 40 points can be 80 or 120 real pixels. Bigger places, like Meet tiles and your account page, show it larger still. Starting from 1024 × 1024 gives Google plenty to scale down from, and it’s still a small file.

Going much bigger than that doesn’t help: Google shrinks it anyway.

Framing a photo for a circle

Because the picture is shown as a circle, the corners of your square image are never seen. A few guidelines:

Centre your face and let your head and the top of your shoulders fill most of the circle.
Crop tighter than feels natural. At 32 pixels, a head-and-shoulders shot is still recognisable; a full-length photo isn’t.
Keep text and logos inside the middle. Anything near the corners is cut off. A wide logo needs to fit across the centre line.
Use a plain background so your face stands out at small sizes.

PNG or JPEG?

JPEG for photos. It makes smaller files with no visible difference.
PNG for logos, initials and flat colours. Edges and letters stay perfectly crisp.

Common questions

Can my Google profile picture be a GIF?

Yes, when you upload it yourself from your Google Account, and some parts of Google will animate it. Photos set centrally by a Workspace administrator must be JPEG or PNG. See how to make your Gmail profile picture animated.

Why does my Google profile picture look blurry?

Usually the original was small, or it was cropped tightly from a larger photo, so Google had to scale it up. Start from a square image of at least 1024 × 1024 pixels.

What happens if I upload a rectangular photo?

Google accepts it and scales it automatically, then shows it as a circle, so it decides what gets cut off. Cropping it square yourself first means you choose what stays in view.
